The Macedon Ranges at a glance

A cool-climate region of small, mostly family-run wineries an hour or so north-west of the city, set among forest, farmland and mountain country. Every Macedon day we run is private, and shaped around the group rather than a fixed route.

Around 1 to 1¼ hrs from Melbourne

Straight up the Calder, then country roads into the ranges.

The region opens right up when the numbers stay modest.

Getting there

Closer than you might think

For guests coming from Melbourne’s north or north-west, Macedon wine country can be especially easy to reach. Suburbs out along the Calder are often closer to the first cellar door than they are to most of the Yarra Valley. Times vary by suburb, so we confirm yours when we plan the day.

Private and custom

How would you like to do Macedon?

Three ways in. Hand us the whole day, hand us the parts you already care about, or keep the planning and let us drive.

The drive is part of it

Once you leave the Calder, the last stretch moves into forest, farmland and country roads, so the scenery changes well before the first tasting.

The region

A different side of Victorian wine country

Macedon sits a little apart from the usual wine tour circuit. The roads move through forest, farmland, reserves and small country towns, and the cellar doors are spread out rather than lined up along one road. You find the region place by place instead of ticking off a strip.

Most of the wineries here are small, and plenty are family owned and run. Tastings are intimate, the people pouring often had a hand in making the wine, and the pace is unhurried. There is far less tourism traffic than the bigger regions, which is exactly why a lot of Melbourne locals keep coming back.

Smaller producers

Cellar doors are modest in scale and often family-run, so tastings stay personal and unhurried.

Country hospitality

Local produce, proper lunches and hosts who have time to talk. Nothing here is run on a conveyor belt.

Fewer crowds

Far less tour traffic than the bigger regions, which changes how a Saturday actually feels.

What makes it Macedon

Made for the curious, not the crowds

Three things that shape a day up here, and none of them are about scale.

A misty walking path through forest on Mount Macedon
01 · Wine from higher country

Cool-climate wine with a real identity

Macedon is particularly known for premium cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling wine. The cooler growing conditions give the wines a style you can taste against the warmer regions closer to town, and the producers making them are, for the most part, small.

Glasses being poured in a winery barrel hall
02 · Nature comes with the territory

The landscape is not just the backdrop

Hanging Rock, Mount Macedon, forest, reserves, gardens and native trees are all part of the same day. The drive between stops is genuinely worth looking out the window for, which is not something we would say about every region we tour.

A tree turning gold among the eucalypts in the Macedon Ranges
03 · Still wonderfully local

Family-run, and it shows

Small cellar doors, local produce and country towns that are still working towns. Fewer tour groups means more time with whoever is pouring, and that intimacy is the thing guests tend to mention afterwards.

Ask us quietly and we might admit Macedon is one of our favourite places for Pinot Noir.

Inspiration, not packages

What kind of Macedon day sounds like you?

Four directions a Macedon day tends to take. None of them is a fixed product with a set list of stops or a price. Pick the one that sounds closest and we will build the real version around your group, your date and what is open.

Planning knowledge

Macedon is better kept small

This is a boutique region, and group size genuinely changes what we can build. Rather than forcing every group into the same itinerary, we work with the scale of the region.

The sweet spot

Up to 24 guests

Right in Macedon's sweet spot

At this size the whole region is open to us. Boutique wineries, smaller cellar doors, the rural roads that get you to them and relaxed lunch venues that can seat you properly.

  • Access to the smallest and most characterful cellar doors
  • Rural and narrower roads are no obstacle
  • Easiest size to build around a particular lunch or landmark

Typical day · Up to 3 stops

Larger groups

25+ guests

Curated more selectively

Larger groups need more careful planning here. Many of the wineries are small, some access roads are unsealed and not every property suits a coach. We choose venues that can genuinely host the group comfortably.

  • Properties with real capacity, space to sit and be served
  • Road access checked against the vehicle before we commit
  • A longer, better lunch instead of a rushed third stop

Typical day · Usually 2 stops

We shape the day around what the region can do well, rather than forcing a coach sized group into an itinerary designed for ten people.

Places we love building Macedon days around

Inspiration rather than a fixed list. The right mix depends on your group size, your date and what you want out of the day.

DKT favourite

Hanging Rock Winery

Strong views and a genuine sense of place, and one of the few properties in the region that can comfortably suit larger groups.

DKT favourite

Mount Monument

Premium and architectural, set among remarkable vineyard views with a sculpture element. A favourite lunch option where available, subject to the tour date and a group booking.

Larger groups

Cleveland Winery

A useful option when the numbers climb, with the capacity and the space to host a bigger group properly.

These are venues we regularly consider, not guaranteed itinerary inclusions or partnerships. Availability, group policies and trading hours vary, and we confirm the day with you before it runs.

Lunch

Good wine deserves a proper country lunch

Food is not an afterthought up here. Local produce is part of what the region is known for, and a Macedon day is usually built around the meal rather than fitted around it.

Depending on the group we might suggest shared regional dining, a winery lunch with vineyard views, a relaxed country pub or something more elaborate. Mount Monument is a favourite where the date and a group booking allow. We will put a recommendation in front of you and adjust from there.

What might a full Macedon day look like?

Times are deliberately loose. Pickup location, venue bookings and the mood of the group all move them. This is the shape of a day, not a fixed itinerary.

Prefer a slower morning? A 10:00am pickup can work for some private days.

9:00am

Pickup from Melbourne

We collect your group from a home, hotel or accommodation address. North-west pickups often run a little later, since the drive is shorter.

10:30am

First cellar door

A relaxed tasting at a venue chosen for the size and style of your group, with time to talk to whoever is pouring.

12:00pm

Wine tasting and regional lunch

Usually the longest part of the day, and deliberately so. Lunch is matched to the group and the budget.

2:30pm

Final tasting or regional stop

Another cellar door, or something different. A landmark, a garden or a country town, depending on what you want.

3:30pm

Begin the journey home

Back at a comfortable hour, with the return drive allowed for properly rather than squeezed in.

Vine rows curving across a hillside

Take the slower road

Half the character of a Macedon day happens between the stops. Forest, farmland, mountain country and roads that were never built to be quick. It is a good argument for letting someone else drive.

Beyond the cellar door

The landscape is part of the day

Wine stays central to what we do here. But Macedon is one of the few regions where the surroundings are strong enough to earn their own place in the itinerary, where the timing and the group allow.

Regional icon

Hanging Rock

One of Victoria’s most recognisable natural landmarks, and it sits right in the middle of the wine region. Private tours can take in the Hanging Rock attraction alongside the cellar doors where timing and booking arrangements allow, which is a combination no other region we tour can offer.

Not part of every itinerary. Tell us if it matters to you and we will build the day so it fits.

Mount Macedon

Mountain scenery, forest and country roads, and one of the landscapes that defines the region. The drive over is worth doing in its own right.

Gardens and autumn colour

Macedon is known for its mature trees and autumn colour. Forest Glade Gardens has featured on our itineraries before and pairs well with a wine day, where booked and timing allows. Group visits need to be arranged in advance.

Vine rows disappearing into winter fog

Woodend and Kyneton

Kyneton brings restaurants, bars and shops, Woodend an authentic country town feel. Either can be worked in when a group wants more than cellar doors, though not every Macedon day takes in both.

Through the year

Macedon changes with the seasons

This is a cool climate region, and it looks and feels genuinely different across the year. Worth knowing when you pick a date.

White blossom opening on the vines in spring

Autumn

Mar – May

The region’s strongest season. Mature trees turn right through the ranges, and Macedon town in particular draws people for its tree lined streets. Autumn is particularly popular, so timing, road access and parking may affect how we shape the day.

Vines in full green leaf under summer sun

Winter

Jun – Aug

Cool, misty and genuinely atmospheric. Fires lit in the cellar doors, reds showing at their best and a landscape that looks like nowhere else within an hour of Melbourne.

Spring

Sep – Nov

Gardens open up, the forest greens and the vines come back to life. A good season for pairing wine with a garden stop or a walk through the reserves.

Summer

Dec – Feb

Longer days suit vineyard lunches, sparkling and time outdoors when the weather plays along. Lighter styles come into their own and the day can stretch a little later.

Planning a Macedon Ranges wine tour

The questions we are asked most often about the region.

Around 70 km from the CBD, which is roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter by road depending on your pickup point and the traffic. The Calder does most of the work, then the last stretch moves into country roads.

Very. From suburbs out along the Calder corridor parts of the region can be around 45 minutes away, which makes it a noticeably easier day than crossing town for the Yarra Valley or Mornington. Times do vary by suburb, so we confirm yours when we plan the day.

For groups of 24 or fewer we usually plan up to three stops. For 25 or more it is normally two, chosen because they can host the group comfortably. Cellar doors here are spread out, so fewer stops with proper time at each makes a better day than a rushed list.

Yes, with more careful planning. Many of the wineries are small, some access roads are unsealed and not every property suits a coach. We select venues that can genuinely handle the group, confirm road access against the vehicle, and are upfront if something on your wish list will not work.

Often, yes. Private tours can take in the Hanging Rock attraction alongside cellar doors where timing and booking arrangements allow, and it is one of the things that makes a Macedon day different. It is not automatically part of every itinerary, so tell us early if it matters and we will build the day around it.

Absolutely. Send through the places you already have in mind and we will build a workable day around them, or tell us the occasion and leave the shortlist to us. Most groups land somewhere in between with one or two must visits.

Yes, and in this region we would encourage it. Shared regional dining, a winery lunch with vineyard views, a country pub or something more elaborate are all possible. Mount Monument is a favourite where the date and a group booking allow. We will suggest an option that suits the group and the budget, then book it as part of the itinerary.

Yes. The region has distilleries, a cidery and brewing alongside the wineries, and mixing them in works well for groups with a range of preferences or anyone who would rather not do three wine tastings in a row.

Sometimes, depending on the shape of the day. Kyneton in particular has restaurants, bars and shops worth a stop, and Woodend gives you an authentic country town element. Both work best when the group is happy to trade a tasting for the time.

Where timing allows. Forest Glade Gardens has featured on our itineraries previously and group visits need arranging in advance, and the drive over Mount Macedon is worth doing in its own right. Autumn is particularly popular around Macedon and Mount Macedon, so timing, road access and parking can affect how we shape the day. These are add ons we plan around the wine rather than instead of it.

Yes. We can collect from homes, hotels or accommodation addresses across Melbourne, and pickups in the northern and north western suburbs work particularly well for this region. We can often accommodate multiple pickup points depending on their locations and the timing of the day, and we factor any additional travel into the itinerary and quote.

Yes. If you have already booked your venues and lunch, we supply the vehicle and a professional driver and follow your itinerary for the day. That is our charter and driver hire service, priced on the shape of the day rather than per person.
